Cleaning Out My Closet
It’s happening again — I’m reorganizing my home office.
I work from home in our repurposed third bedroom. I’m constantly in search of the perfect fusion of efficiency, style and comfort for this 10-by-10 room. It seems to shrink the more time I spend in it.
I have a wide standing/sitting desk that houses my laptop dock, a large computer monitor, speakers, and a tray for my electronic piano. I have another weighted keyboard on the parallel wall next to a bookshelf full of trumpet accessories and music that I haven’t used for ten years.
A few months ago, I removed the doors of the closet. This was exciting at the time. It felt like unlocking a new area on the map of a video game. So much space to explore! …It’s now full of a printer station, all of my instrument cases, and “work clothes” like a disco uniform and ripped jeans for when I attempt to look “edgy”.
I have a plant and a chair next to the window. The window looks out to a beautiful scene of… brick? Why am I staring at a brick wall? Who would build a non-load-bearing brick wall for a 4-ft, unusable outdoor space? Why not add that to the other bedroom and give some more square-footage to the house?
Now I just want to get a new house. I am 24 sq. ft. away from pure contentment — and pure contentment is space for an electronic drum kit.

Let’s be honest — I’m reorganizing my home office because I feel stagnant again. I am searching for answers on why I feel somewhat lost and aimless. I’m running away from the self-assignment in my professional life and placing the blame on the fact that I don’t have room for a damn drum kit.
Taking a step back, I notice that my daily journal is looking a little sparce. My workouts are sporadic. My sleep schedule is all out-of-whack. And then I remember… It’s the holidays. I let out a sigh of relief. Of course I feel like I am meandering through life and I can see a bit more of my stomach. I’ve just spent all this time being grateful for life, driving half-way across the country and back to enjoy time with family and friends while eating nothing but delicious food.
I just need a little redirect, that’s all.
…and maybe I can substitute that printer station for a drum kit…
