Unforeseen Difficulties of Being a Musician Vol. 1

Living Outside of a Musical

It’s almost-impressively easy for me to burst into song. I am conditioned to hear a phrase or a musical line and respond. No one is safe, not even my Honda CR-V. The first three start-up tones will certainly be followed by a full performance of Bette Midler’s “The Rose” — even though I don’t know any words past “Some say love… it is a…”

A simple phrase in any sentence can elicit an involuntary response in song. If you’re not prepared, this will completely derail the flow of conversation. Gabi and I will sometimes get lost in a full performance before realizing we still need to pick a restaurant for dinner. Here are a few “trigger phrases” to get me going…

  • “…it’s been a while…” — STAIND

  • “…it wasn’t me…” — SHAGGY

  • “…hello…” —LIONEL

  • “…all I wanna do…” —SHERYL

  • “…whatever it is…” —ZBB

  • “…do you remember…” —MICHAEL

  • “…it’s cold outside…” —MATCHBOX

  • “…stop…” —SURPREMES

  • “…turn it off…” — MORMON

  • “…this is how…” — NICKELBACK
